How to plan a mixed container of body parts (20ft and 40HQ)

A practical mixed-container plan for lamps, mirrors, bumpers and panels: CBM and MOQ maths, damage protection, loading photos and one document set for the whole load.

A mixed container is not a container filled with whatever is left on the order list. It is a CBM plan with a price list attached: a few anchor SKUs that fill the volume, a tail of lamps, mirrors and trim that pays the margin, and a packing order that keeps the fragile lines on top and the heavy lines on the floor.

Get the plan right and one container carries six to ten SKUs without a damage claim. Get it wrong and you pay for air, or you pay for crushed lamp cartons.

Step 1: set the usable volume, not the nominal volume

Nominal CBM is a geometric number. Usable volume is what a loading team can actually stack without crushing cartons or exceeding payload. Plan with usable volume and leave a buffer:

ContainerNominal CBMUsable planning volumeBest for
20ft GP33.226–28 CBMFirst mixed order, 6–10 SKUs
40ft GP67.754–57 CBMBulk cartons, one or two families
40ft HQ76.462–66 CBMVoluminous bumpers, kits and panels

These are planning bands, not loading guarantees — the forwarder confirms the container specification and the loading team confirms the final stack. The detailed load plan and per-family packing rules are in the container loading guide.

Step 2: separate anchor SKUs from filler SKUs

Mixed loads work when every SKU has a job:

  • Anchors fill volume and justify the freight: body kits, hoods, bumpers and steel panels. Ten to twenty anchor units can carry most of a 20ft.
  • Fillers add revenue per CBM and complete the range: lamps, mirrors, small repair parts, chrome accessories.

A healthy first mix is roughly half the volume in anchors and half in fillers. A 90% lamp container pays freight for air; a 90% body-kit container leaves the body shop with nothing to repair the next job.

The per-family CBM assumptions we publish — for example 0.09–0.12 CBM per lamp pair, 0.05–0.08 CBM per mirror, 0.12–0.20 CBM per bumper — are planning numbers. Ask for the measured carton size for the exact SKU before you reserve space. The mixed-container consolidation guide explains the anchor/filler split in more depth.

Step 3: build the order inside the MOQ rules

MOQ applies per SKU, not per container, which is what makes a mixed first order possible:

  • 20 pcs per SKU on stock parts; 20 pairs on lamps; some small accessories start at 100 pcs because they are carton-packed.
  • Production runs 7–15 days for stock items after confirmation; painted parts and new tooling take longer.
  • A mixed order can combine lamps, mirrors, bumpers, panels and accessories in one load — the MOQ is per line, so breadth does not multiply the minimum.

Illustrative planning example, clearly not a quotation: 30 lamp pairs (≈3.2 CBM), 20 mirror pairs (≈1.4 CBM), 12 body kits (≈6.5 CBM), 30 flare sets (≈5.4 CBM), 10 bumpers (≈1.6 CBM), 100 corner lights (≈0.5 CBM) and 200 chrome handle sets (≈0.14 CBM) totals roughly 19 CBM — a comfortable 20ft with room for another anchor family.

Step 4: pack for the last mile, not just the ocean

Most damage does not happen at sea. It happens when a carton is crushed by a heavier carton above it, or when a pallet is dropped at the destination warehouse. The packing spec should say:

  • Heavy and rigid on the floor — bumpers, steel panels, hoods, kits. Keep the stack to about 1.2 m.
  • Fragile on top — lamp cartons are foam-lined but crush under weight; never stack kits on top of lamps.
  • Painted parts protected — film and foam corners; no newspaper, which transfers ink.
  • Voids filled with dunnage, not loose parts. Loose hardware is the most common shortage claim.
  • Carton marks with SKU, description, quantity, side (LH/RH) and carton number.

Step 5: photograph the load and keep one document set

A mixed container produces one set of shipping documents, not one per SKU:

  • Loading photos: empty container, half-loaded, full, seal. These are the cheapest evidence for a damage or shortage claim.
  • Packing list that lists every SKU and checks the carton count against the loading count.
  • Commercial invoice with the full SKU list; the HS code is per product family, not per container.
  • Certificate of origin and any conformity support prepared per shipment — for markets with pre-shipment inspection or Gulf conformity programmes, the scheme is commonly required and the scope is confirmed with your broker.
  • One conformity scope check: if a market requires an inspection or certificate, it covers the SKUs in the container. A mixed load with a new SKU that was not in the conformity file can be stopped on arrival.

Step 6: review the mix before the next container

Keep a simple post-load review: which SKUs sold through first, which cartons were hardest to handle, and which anchor family actually filled the volume. The next mix is then a small adjustment instead of a rebuild.

Our LCL vs FCL comparison covers the freight-mode decision for smaller first orders; the product catalogues for lamps and steel body parts show the families that typically carry a mixed load. When the mix is ready, paste the SKU list into the bulk RFQ form and ask for CBM per line plus a loading plan.

FAQ

How many SKUs can a 20ft mixed container carry? Six to ten is a practical first mix; more is possible, but each SKU adds carton marks, QC records and warehouse picks.

Do I have to order a full container? No. LCL from around 3 CBM is workable for a first test, and a 20ft becomes worthwhile once the mix fills roughly 20 CBM.

Can you mix different brands in one container? Yes — for example D-Max lamps, Hilux flares and Ranger bumpers — provided each SKU is listed separately on the invoice and packing list.

Who arranges the loading? Loading happens at the consolidation warehouse or factory before sealing; the buyer receives loading photos and the seal number. Send the mix and destination for a CBM-based quote.
