The Isuzu D-Max is one of the most serviced pickups in Asia, Africa and Latin America, and one of the deepest ranges Jiangsu Dongzhan manufactures — headlamps, tail lamps, corner and side lamps, fog lamps, mirrors, bumpers, fenders, flares, chrome accessories and interior trim across every generation from 2002 to 2024. That depth is also the problem: the D-Max has been facelifted and re-platformed repeatedly, and parts from one generation rarely swap into another.
This guide is what we tell a distributor who is building a D-Max programme: the generations, the parts that fail, the OEM numbers we see most, and the fitment traps that cause returns.
The generations, and what changes
Year ranges are a starting point; the generation code is the real answer. When a buyer gives us a year range and a photo, we can usually identify the generation in one reply — but the safest order inputs are the code and the build month.
| Generation | Codes / notes | Years | What changes for exterior parts |
|---|---|---|---|
| TFR / RA | Older TFR pickups and JMC-derived variants | 1998–2011 | Distinct body; parts do not interchange with later D-Max |
| RT (first D-Max) | 2012–2016 | 2012–2016 | Headlamp, grille and front bumper unique to this front end |
| RT facelift | 2017–2019 | 2017–2019 | New grille, bumper and lamp detailing; mountings differ |
| RG01 | The 2020+ platform | 2020–2023 | Completely new front end — the pre-2020 lamp does not fit |
| 2024 | New-generation D-Max | 2024 | New front and rear styling; confirm before ordering |
For a distributor, the practical split is three front ends: 2012–2016, 2017–2019 and 2020–2023/24. Stocking all three is normal; mixing them in one carton is a warehouse error waiting to happen. Ask your supplier to print the generation code and side (LH/RH) on every carton.
What fails, and what sells
Pickups are working vehicles, and the D-Max is often a fleet vehicle. The damage pattern is consistent:
- Headlamps — front and front-corner impacts, plus lens yellowing on older vehicles in high-UV markets. Fastest mover after the bumper.
- Tail lamps — reversing and loading damage, especially on work trucks with trays.
- Corner and side lamps — small, cheap, high-turnover repair parts; the numbers below are the ones most requested.
- Mirrors — the most frequently damaged part on any contracting fleet; power-fold mirrors are increasingly specified.
- Front bumpers and grilles — impact and styling replacements; primed bumpers are easier to stock than painted.
- Fenders, hoods and door shells — insurance and fleet refurbishment; steel panels move in volume where labour is cheap.
- Fender flares and body kits — the styling market; strong in the Gulf, Southeast Asia and Latin America.
- Chrome and interior accessories — handle covers, mirror caps, dash trims; retail margin rather than repair volume.
Two OEM cross-references worth keeping in your catalogue: the corner light assembly for the 2020 D-Max, OEM 8983933613 (RH) and 8983933623 (LH); and the side marker lamp, OEM 8983950310, which fits the front fender cut-out on 2019–2022 trucks. These small parts are often ordered with lamps and mirrors, so they belong in the same container.
What to stock, by market
The same D-Max takes different parts in different markets. Three profiles:
| Market profile | What to stock | Price line |
|---|---|---|
| Gulf and urban retail | LED headlamps, smoked LED tail lamps, chrome mirrors, flares, styling kits | Premium / retail margin |
| Africa and fleet repair | Halogen headlamps, fog kits, steel fenders, hoods, mirrors, dash trims | Value / repair volume |
| Southeast Asia and styling shops | LED lamps, sequential indicators, flares, body kits, chrome covers | Mixed, trend-led |
Our catalogue covers both ends of that range. The LED headlight assembly for the 2020–2023 D-Max is the plug-and-play premium option at around $78 per pair; the halogen headlight for the same platform targets value markets at roughly half the price, with the same mounting points and connectors. Stocking both lets you serve a fleet tender and a retail shop from one container.
The fitment traps that cause returns
- The 2019 vs 2020 front end. These are different generations of front-end styling. A 2020 lamp will not fit a 2019 truck, and the year range on a supplier page that says “2019–2022” is a warning sign, not a guarantee.
- Facelift within the same nameplate. 2012–2016 and 2017–2019 RT trucks look similar in a thumbnail but use different grilles, bumpers and lamp detailing. Ask for the build month and a front three-quarter photo.
- Handedness. The D-Max is sold in both LHD and RHD markets. Headlamps, mirrors and some interior parts are handed; quote the destination market, not just the part.
- Trim levels. V-Cross and other trim packages change grille and bumper detailing. A standard bumper is not a V-Cross bumper.
- OEM number mismatch. A cross-reference that appears on a competitor listing may be a superseded number or a different side. Confirm left/right and supersession before you print labels.
- 2024 model overlap. The newest generation overlaps in model year with late 2023 production in some markets. When in doubt, ask for the VIN.
The fitment verification guide has the photo checklist we use — generation code, build month, body style, drive, handedness and trim.
A suggested starter order
A mixed 20ft for a distributor building a D-Max programme, using our published MOQs and estimating 26–27 CBM (adjust with measured carton sizes):
| SKU | Quantity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| LED headlight 2020–2023 | 30 pairs | Premium line for retail |
| Halogen headlight 2020–2023 | 30 pairs | Value line / fleet tenders |
| LED tail light 2020–2022 | 40 pairs | Smoked, retail margin |
| Fog lamp kit 2019–2022 | 20 sets | Complete kit with harness |
| Corner light 2020 (OEM ref) | 50 pcs | High-turnover repair part |
| Side lamp 2019–2022 (OEM ref) | 100 pcs | Fills the fender cut-out |
| Chrome door mirror 2020–2023 | 20 pairs | Retail accessory |
| Fender flares 2020+ | 20 sets | Styling market |
| Front fender 2020–2023 | 20 pcs | Insurance repair |
That mix covers repair, value and styling at a volume one warehouse can hold, and every SKU shares a generation so the labels cannot be confused. For a first order, replace depth on two SKUs before adding a fourth generation.
How we support D-Max buyers
- Free sample evaluation on qualified orders — fit the sample to a real truck before you commit. See the free sample process.
- OEM cross-references captured in our catalogue for the parts that carry them, with the caveat that they must be verified per VIN before ordering.
- Mixed containers across D-Max generations and other platforms — see the container loading guide for how we plan the mix.
- Market-specific spec — UV-stable lenses for the Gulf, corrosion protection for coastal Africa, cold-flex plastics for CIS.
If you are building a D-Max programme for a specific market, send us the generation list and quantities. We will come back with a suggested mix, pricing, and the exact fitment confirmation for each SKU — normally within two business hours. FAQ
How do I identify my D-Max generation? Use the VIN and build month, plus a straight-on photo of the front end. The 2012–2016, 2017–2019, 2020–2023 and 2024+ front ends differ in lamps, grille, bumper and fenders. A year range alone is not a fitment guarantee near a changeover.
Which D-Max parts are generation-specific? Headlights, tail lamps, grille, front bumper and fender pressings are the most generation-specific. Mirrors also vary by generation and trim. Cab parts may carry over while the front end changes, so do not assume a whole basket shares one fitment.
What is a good starter basket for a D-Max distributor? A front-corner repair basket: one lamp, fender, bumper, grille and mirror cover, ordered with quantities by side. MOQ starts at 20 pcs on stock parts, 20 pairs on lamps, and mixed baskets are normal in one container. Add flares for the styling counter.
Can I fit 2020 lamps on an earlier D-Max? No. The 2020–2023 front end uses different lamp mounts, connectors and surrounds from the earlier generations. If the truck is near a changeover, send the VIN and a photo of the original lamp label, and ask for written fitment confirmation before ordering.
