Tail lamps look interchangeable in photos and are not. On the Isuzu D-Max the rear lamp changed with the front-end generations, the LED and halogen versions use different internal electronics, and left and right are separate parts. Order by generation and side, confirm the connector, and the return freight problem disappears.
This guide covers the D-Max generations in our Isuzu vehicle index, what changes at the rear, the LED and halogen choice, and the checks to run before the order.
D-Max generations in the catalogue
| Generation | Model years | Rear-lamp coverage |
|---|---|---|
| RT | 2012–2016 | Tail lamp assembly listed for this generation |
| RT facelift | 2017–2019 | Confirm build month; facelift rear detailing differs |
| RG01 | 2020–2023 | LED tail lamp listed for 2020–2022 trucks; see the 2020–2023 D-Max page |
| Latest | 2024+ | New body — confirm by VIN before ordering |
The gap years are where orders go wrong. A truck built in the changeover month can sit on either side of a facelift, and a listing that says “D-Max 2012–2024 tail light” is hiding at least two different parts. Ask for the generation, not the range.
LED or halogen: what actually differs
- Electronics. An LED tail lamp carries a driver board and different wiring inside the housing. It is not a bulb swap, and a halogen harness may not be plug-compatible without adaptation.
- Connector and pin count. The plug shape and the number of pins can change between trims and generations. Confirm the connector on the original lamp before ordering, especially when the truck has been repaired before.
- Function set. Depending on the version, the rear lamp includes tail, brake, reverse, indicator and sometimes a fog function. Confirm which functions your part number covers instead of assuming all of them.
- Finish. Smoked and clear variants exist for the styling channel; a smoked lamp is a different SKU, not a filter over the standard part.
- Side. Left and right are separate mouldings and separate SKUs. “Pair” pricing is convenient, but the invoice and carton marks should still show LH and RH.
Confirm before you order
Send four things with the enquiry:
- VIN or build month. The month resolves the changeover risk.
- A photo of the original tail lamp, straight on and from the side, plus a close-up of the connector if the lamp is off the truck.
- The side being repaired — LH or RH — and the quantity of each.
- The look you are buying: OE-style, clear or smoked, for repair or for the styling counter.
If the truck has a body kit, a rear bumper change or a previous repair, say so. Those changes can affect the lamp surround and the fit even when the generation is correct.
Common ordering mistakes
- Buying by model year only. The facelift and changeover years are exactly where fitment fails.
- Assuming LED and halogen share a plug. They can differ in connector and function; confirm before the container ships.
- Ordering “sets” without side markings. The warehouse then mixes left and right, and the body shop discovers it during installation.
- Ignoring the rear bumper and tailgate. A rear-corner impact often needs the lamp plus the bumper bracket or the tailgate trim; a lamp-only order leaves the repair half-finished.
- Not asking for packing data. Tail lamps are fragile; foam-lined individual cartons and carton marks with side labels prevent most transit damage.
- Skipping the inspection photos. Ask for the packed carton and sealed-container photos before the balance payment.
The rear-corner basket
A rear-corner repair is rarely one lamp. The same impact that cracks the lamp usually disturbs the bumper bracket, the tailgate trim or the inner panel, so a lamp-only order sends the body shop back for a second shipment. Build the basket before you send the RFQ: the tail lamp for the damaged side, the rear bumper or its bracket if the impact reached the bumper line, the tailgate trim or handle if the panel is distorted, and any clip or seal that the repair manual lists as single-use.
Two practical rules keep the basket honest. First, photograph the whole corner, not only the broken lamp, so the supplier can see what the impact touched. Second, ask for the basket to be quoted as separate lines with its own packing data — lamps and bumper parts pack differently, and the CBM per line is what tells you whether the basket fits the mixed container you are planning. If the basket includes a painted part, add the paint programme to the lead time in the quotation.
Pricing, MOQ and shipment
Tail lamps are quoted in pairs on stock items, with MOQ starting at 20 pairs. Production typically runs 7–15 days after confirmation; mixed orders across lamps, mirrors, bumpers and panels can travel in one container. FOB, CIF and DDP are quoted depending on the lane, and the written quotation confirms the SKU, side, packing and incoterm.
For a deeper view of the platform, read the D-Max body-parts buying guide; send the VIN, side and quantity through the RFQ form and the headlight replacement guide covers the front end with the same generation logic. The lamps category shows the wider range, and the two listed parts are the LED tail lamp for 2020–2022 and the tail lamp for 2012–2016.
FAQ
Will a 2016 tail light fit my 2017 D-Max? Not automatically. The facelift changed rear detailing, and the changeover month matters. Send the VIN, build month and a photo of the original lamp, and ask for written fitment confirmation before ordering.
Can I upgrade a halogen D-Max to LED tail lamps? Only when the LED lamp is designed for that generation and connector. The LED housing includes electronics and may need a different plug. Confirm the connector and function set with the supplier, and test one pair before ordering the container.
Why are left and right sold as separate parts? They are different mouldings that follow the body shape on each side, and they are separate SKUs. Order quantities by side and keep the LH/RH marks on the cartons so the warehouse does not mix them.
What is the MOQ and lead time for D-Max tail lamps? MOQ starts at 20 pairs on stock items, with typical production of 7–15 days after confirmation. Painted or smoked finishes can take longer. FOB, CIF or DDP is quoted on your lane, with documents prepared per shipment.
