A D-Max headlight is one of the most requested parts we ship — and one of the most returned when the generation is wrong. Isuzu has changed the front end of the D-Max four times since 2012, and the lamp, grille and bumper changed with it. A 2020 assembly will not fit a 2019 truck, even though both are sold as “D-Max”. The parts look similar in a thumbnail; the mounting tabs and connector are not.

This guide is the version we send to distributors and body shops before they order: the generations, what fails, how to verify a fitment in one message, the approval question, and what a sensible first stock order looks like.

The four D-Max front ends you will see

Use the generation code first and the year range second. Year ranges overlap in export markets, especially where a previous-generation truck was sold alongside the new one.

GenerationYears (typical)What changes for the headlight
TFR / early pickups2002–2011Separate body and lamp; does not interchange with any later D-Max
RT first front end2012–2016Its own lamp shape, grille and bumper cut-outs
RT facelift2017–2019Revised grille and bumper detail; lamp mountings differ from 2012–2016
RG012020–2023Completely new front end; the pre-2020 lamp does not fit
2024 generation2024+New styling again; confirm year, month and VIN

For a headlight order, that table reduces to three practical variants: 2012–2016, 2017–2019 and 2020–2023/24. Most distributors we work with stock the 2020+ variant in both halogen and LED, then keep a smaller quantity of the earlier RT lamps for repair demand.

What actually fails

Pickups work for a living, and the headlight takes the first hit in most front-end incidents:

  • Lens yellowing and crazing on high-UV markets — the light output drops long before the lamp stops working, so the owner replaces it as a visibility issue rather than a breakdown.
  • Moisture and fogging after a knock cracks the housing seal or the breather membrane is damaged. A lamp that fogs after rain usually has a housing problem, not a bulb problem.
  • Broken mounting tabs after a minor impact. The lamp still lights, but it vibrates and the beam pattern fails the annual inspection.
  • DRL or indicator failure on LED units. The low beam may be fine while the daytime running light has failed, which is an inspection failure in most markets.
  • Corner and side lamps crack in the same impact. They are cheap, fast-moving repair parts and belong in the same order as the headlight.

Fitment: five checks before you buy

We confirm a D-Max headlight fitment from five data points. Send all five and the answer is usually one reply, not a week of photos.

  1. Generation code or VIN. The model code from the registration document beats a year range.
  2. Build year and month. Facelifts happen mid-year; a late-2020 build can still be a pre-facelift truck in some markets.
  3. Left- or right-hand drive. The D-Max is sold in both configurations. Lamps are handed and the beam pattern is asymmetric — the wrong market lamp will not pass inspection even if it bolts in.
  4. Trim and body variant. V-Cross and other trims change grille and bumper detailing, which changes the lamp surround on some model years.
  5. A photo of the front three-quarter and the old lamp’s label. The label is often the fastest confirmation of the original part.

Our fitment verification guide has the full photo checklist. If you only have a VIN plate photo, send that — we can usually work back from it.

Halogen or LED? Decide by what you sell

Both are legitimate products for different customers, and the LED vs halogen headlights comparison covers the trade-offs in detail. For the D-Max specifically:

  • Halogen is the value and fleet-repair line. It matches the OE look, uses replaceable bulbs and costs less, which matters where a workshop bills the repair to an insurer or a fleet manager. Our current catalogue lists the halogen headlight for the 2020 D-Max at around $42 per pair — an indicative catalogue band, confirmed on the quote.
  • LED is the retail and styling line: integrated DRL, projector low beam, a modern look and a higher ticket. The LED headlight assembly for the 2020–2023 D-Max is the plug-and-play option in the catalogue, around $78 per pair.

The connector question matters more than the light source. Both our D-Max assemblies are built to the OEM connector and mounting points, but a supplier that cannot state pin count and connector type is guessing. For a distributor, “plug-and-play” should mean the workshop does not touch the loom.

Approvals: read the scope, not the sticker

Selected Dongzhan lamp families carry E-MARK documentation approval; the certified scope is available on request and is not the same thing as “every lamp we make is approved”. E-MARK is a European component type approval. It does not replace a Gulf conformity scheme, a US FMVSS 108 validation or an EAC document — each market has its own route, and the E-MARK vs DOT vs CCC guide explains which one applies where.

For a D-Max programme, ask your supplier for the approval number, the regulation it was granted under, the certificate holder and the exact part numbers in scope. Then compare that with the E-number moulded on the lens. If the four answers do not line up, the certificate does not protect your shipment.

Workshop notes for the replacement

A headlight replacement on a D-Max is a bumper-off job on most generations. Two practical points reduce comeback:

  • Do not skip beam aim. A new assembly is a reference part; the beam must be adjusted on the vehicle after fitting. Workshops that skip this get the vehicle back after the first night drive.
  • Reuse or replace the clips, not just the lamp. The bumper and grille clips that break during removal are a common shortage on the repair order. Add a clip kit to the headlight line.

A starting stock plan

For a distributor building a D-Max lighting programme, a mixed 20ft with roughly 26 CBM is a common starting point. The quantities below are a planning example, not a rule — adjust to your repair and retail mix.

SKUSuggested quantityWhy it earns shelf space
LED headlight 2020–202330 pairsRetail and styling demand
Halogen headlight 2020–202330 pairsFleet tenders and insurer repairs
LED tail light 2020–202240 pairsRear-impact repair; fast mover
Corner light 202050 pcsHigh-turnover small part
Side lamp 2019–2022100 pcsFills the fender cut-out; cheap to hold
Fog lamp kit 2019–202220 setsCompletes the front-end repair
Chrome door mirror 2020–202320 pairsThe most frequently damaged body part

The D-Max body parts guide covers the rest of the front end — bumpers, fenders, flares and mirrors — if you are building the full programme rather than a lamp line.

Get the fitment confirmed before the container

Send the generation list, the LHD/RHD market and the quantities. We reply with the correct SKU per generation, the catalogue price band, the lead time and the packing plan — and if a part you asked for does not exist for that truck, we say so rather than substituting. You can see every generation we cover on the Isuzu vehicle pages, or start an RFQ with your current part list.

FAQ

Should I buy halogen or LED for a D-Max? Halogen suits fleet and value-focused repair, while LED suits retail and styling customers. The right choice depends on the connector and the vehicle’s trim, not only on the look. Confirm pin count and mounting before you commit a mixed order.

How do I confirm headlight fitment? Send the VIN, build month and a photo of the front end and the original lamp label. Check the mounting tabs and connector against the generation. Left- and right-hand-drive trucks also use handed beam patterns, so state the market before the order.

What approval documents come with the lamps? Where an existing approval covers the lamp family, the approval number and scope letter are sent with the quotation and confirmed per part number. If the lamp is not covered, we say so before the order; the destination market’s requirement is confirmed with your broker.

How many headlights should I stock? Lamps are quoted in pairs with a MOQ of 20 pairs on stock items. Start with the generation and price point your customers actually repair, hold a fast-mover buffer, and add the other price point once sell-through is proven rather than stocking both deeply at once.
