Lighting comparison

LED vs halogen headlights for trucks and pickups

The most common lighting question we get from distributors is not which lamp is better — it is which one they should stock. LED headlights sell on design and light output; halogen sells on price, OE appearance and fleet repair budgets. The right mix depends on the market you serve, the vehicles you support and whether your customer is repairing a truck or restyling one.

The short answer

Halogen or LED?

Halogen wins on landed cost and OE-style repair demand. LED wins on light output, modern styling and retail margin. Most distributors should stock both, not choose once.

Indicative catalogue bands and planning estimates only — confirmed on quotation. Certification and customs requirements are market-specific: confirm with your broker.

Decision rules

Choose Halogen if… choose LED if…

Choose Halogen if

The value and repair line: replaceable bulbs, OE-style reflector, the look most fleets expect and the lowest price per pair.

  • You sell to fleet workshops, insurance repair channels or price-sensitive markets.
  • The vehicle is a working truck where OE appearance matters more than style.
  • You want the lowest unit cost and a part the workshop can service with standard bulbs.
  • Your market inspection or conformity route is built around the OE lamp type.

Watch out

  • · Lower light output and shorter bulb life than LED — expect bulb replacement as normal service.
  • · Housing quality still matters: a poor seal fogs in humid markets regardless of the bulb.
  • · Not the product for a customer shopping for a modern DRL look.

Choose LED if

The retail and styling line: integrated DRL, projector low beam, modern appearance and a higher ticket with better margin.

  • You sell to retail accessory shops, styling buyers or newer-vehicle owners.
  • The market rewards a modern DRL and projector look — Gulf, Southeast Asia, Latin America.
  • You want a higher-ticket line with retail margin rather than repair-volume pricing.
  • You can stock the fitment by generation and confirm the connector before ordering.

Watch out

  • · Higher price per pair — it is a retail product, not a fleet-consumable repair part.
  • · Beam pattern and connector must match the vehicle market; confirm LHD/RHD and trim.
  • · E-MARK covers selected lamp families only; scope is available on request and is not universal.

Cost and lead time

What changes the number

Catalogue bands describe the shape of the difference, not a quotation. The exact price depends on the SKU, quantity, market configuration, packing and incoterm.

The price gap is not the whole cost

A halogen lamp pair is roughly half the catalogue band of an LED pair, so an LED order ties up more capital per SKU. Counter that with higher margin per unit and faster turns in styling markets. The table figures are indicative catalogue bands, not quotes.

Returns are the hidden cost

A wrong LED fitment returned from a retail customer costs far more than the margin difference: return freight, repacking and a lost customer. Stock fewer LED generations with confirmed fitment rather than broad, unverified coverage.

Production windows

Stock lamp items are typically 7–15 days after deposit; new-model or painted variants are longer. Both lines share the same shipping window, so the decision does not usually change the container date.

Market-specific variants

LHD/RHD and connector variants can add a production step if they are not stock items. Tell us the destination market at quotation so the lead time already includes it.

Questions

LED vs halogen headlights for trucks and pickups — FAQ

The questions buyers ask before choosing. If yours is not here, send it with your part list — you get a named contact, not a form letter.

Ask on your part list
Are LED headlights legal for road use?

It depends on the market and on the product. A complete LED headlight assembly built to a type-approval that the market accepts is a different proposition from an LED bulb fitted into a halogen housing. Confirm the requirement with your authority or broker, and ask for the E-MARK scope where the market recognises it.

Do all your LED headlights have E-MARK?

No. Selected lamp families carry E-MARK documentation approval and the certified scope is available on request. “E-MARK documents on request” should always be read as “these part numbers, under this regulation” — not as a claim about the whole catalogue.

Is LED brighter always better?

Not for the driver or for oncoming traffic. Beam pattern, cut-off and aim matter more than raw output; a badly aimed high-output lamp fails inspection and is unsafe. Treat photometric data and a proper beam aim after fitting as part of the product.

Can a halogen truck be upgraded to LED plug-and-play?

If the LED assembly is built to the same connector and mounting points, the swap is mechanical and plug-in. Check pin count, keyway, DRL wiring and whether the vehicle monitors lamp resistance; some platforms need a resistor or coding. Workshop-level confirmation is always cheaper than a return.

Which line sells better in Africa and the Gulf?

Broadly, the Gulf buys more LED and styling lighting, while African repair channels buy more value halogen. There are exceptions in both regions — city retail versus fleet repair is the real split. Our market guides cover the pattern per region.
