Freight comparison

LCL vs FCL shipping for auto parts buyers

The freight decision is usually made too early, on unit price, and revisited too late, after the container is booked. LCL and FCL have different cost structures: LCL charges for the space you use plus fixed fees, while FCL charges for the box. That means the answer depends on volume, weight, fragility and how much time you have — not on which rate looks lower in a comparison table.

The short answer

LCL or FCL?

Roughly under 8–10 CBM, LCL is usually the right call for a first or trial order. Above 12–15 CBM, a 20ft FCL is normally cheaper per CBM and safer for fragile lamps. The crossover is route-dependent; ask for both on the same order.

Decision rules

Choose LCL if… choose FCL if…

Choose LCL if

Less than container load: your cargo shares a container and is charged per W/M, with a minimum charge and destination CFS fees.

  • You are placing a first order or testing a new market with 3–8 CBM.
  • You need to restock one fast-moving SKU without waiting to fill a container.
  • The cargo is dense and high-value (small lamps, chrome, clips) rather than bulky.
  • You can accept slightly longer transit and an extra handling point.

Watch out

  • · Fixed destination fees make small shipments expensive per CBM.
  • · Cargo is handled at the consolidation facility on both ends — more touches for fragile lamps.
  • · Transit is typically longer than FCL and less predictable at peak season.

Choose FCL if

Full container load: you book the box — a 20ft for roughly 26–28 usable CBM or a 40HQ for 62–66 — and control the load plan.

  • Your order is above roughly 12–15 CBM, where the fixed box cost beats per-CBM LCL.
  • You are shipping fragile or painted parts that benefit from fewer handling points.
  • You want one mixed-SKU stocking order with one bill of lading and one clearance.
  • Timing matters — a full container sails when you book it, without consolidation waiting.

Watch out

  • · You pay for the container even if it is half empty; under-filling is a real cost.
  • · Destination charges vary by port and by forwarder; compare the full landed number.
  • · The load plan and packing are now your risk — heavy on the floor, lamps on top.

Cost and lead time

What changes the number

Catalogue bands describe the shape of the difference, not a quotation. The exact price depends on the SKU, quantity, market configuration, packing and incoterm.

W/M is the number to ask for

LCL is charged on the greater of weight in tonnes or volume in CBM, usually at 1 CBM = 1,000 kg. Auto parts are often volume-light, so the charge follows volume — but steel panels can flip it. Ask the forwarder for the chargeable basis before comparing rates.

Destination fees are the quiet difference

LCL carries CFS and documentation fees at destination that do not shrink with your cargo. On a 3 CBM shipment they can be a meaningful share of the total. Always compare the full door-to-door number, not the ocean freight line. Figures in our [blog guide](/blog/lcl-vs-fcl-auto-parts-shipping/) are planning estimates, not quotes.

Production is the same; sailing is not

Both modes wait for the same 7–25 days of production. The difference is after loading: LCL waits for consolidation and can add a week or more; FCL sails on the booked vessel. If you need stock by a date, work back from the sailing, not from the production finish.

How to phase the first year

Start LCL to validate sell-through, then move to a 20ft when a mix is proven, then to a 40HQ as volume grows. Each step should be triggered by real order volume, not by a shipping-rate prediction.

Questions

LCL vs FCL shipping for auto parts buyers — FAQ

The questions buyers ask before choosing. If yours is not here, send it with your part list — you get a named contact, not a form letter.

Ask on your part list
How many CBM fit in a 20ft container?

Nominal volume is around 33 CBM, but plan on roughly 26–28 usable CBM after carton gaps and loading. Load plans in our container guide use usable CBM and keep the payload under the limit.

At what volume does FCL become cheaper?

It varies by lane, season and destination fees, but the crossover for most of our lanes sits between roughly 8 and 15 CBM. Ask for the same order quoted both ways — that is the only reliable comparison.

Is LCL safe for lamps and painted parts?

It can be, with good cartons and foam packing, but it carries more handling risk than a sealed container. If the order is mostly fragile lamps, wait until the volume justifies a 20ft and pack it properly.

Who handles customs in each mode?

Your broker clears the goods in both cases; the documents are the same set (invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, conformity documents). LCL adds destination CFS handling and its fees to the clearance process.

Can you quote DDP for either mode?

On lanes where our forwarder has a DDP route, yes — for both LCL and FCL. We show FOB and CIF alongside so you can compare against your own broker. Duties and destination charges are included in a DDP number; confirm the current rate at booking.
